There are three primary types of pine that are used to make the tables in our Barnwood Collection:
Southern Yellow Pine This type of pine is a species group that is made up of four groups of trees: Loblolly Pine; Long Leaf Pine; Short Leaf Pine; and Slash Pine. Loblolly Pine is the most predominant of the four. It grows throughout the Atlantic Coastal Plain from Maryland south to Florida and westward to east Texas. It is classified as a hard pine, and is harder than the white pine.
Characteristics Color: warm pale yellow tones with brown knots. Grain: distinctive light and dark grain patterns.
White Pine This type of pine is found in the uplands of Newfoundland, Ontario and Manitoba in Canada, south through New England to South Carolina. White Pine is a very tall tree with relatively few horizontal large limbs.
Characteristics White Pine is a light, soft, straight-grained wood with very uniform texture.
Fir This wood is native to the southern Atlantic coast and is typified as a hard pine. These trees are very tall, with very few horizontal limbs.
Characteristics Wide grain detail, with few knots. Pale yellow-red tones prevail. |
